Tonight on the Interwebs

mood: a damn neighbour is burning crap and it smells like shiiiit
music: Depeche Mode - Lilian (Long Mix)

Ten years ago, what we call now "the traditional media" where inexhaustible on how the information superhighway was the future.
Today it looks like they're still stuck in the past, and definitely not understanding what the Internet is about.
This week's issue of a belgian magazine has 3 pages on "Youtube, memory of rock" (as in rock'n roll) with maybe a dozen of music related videos you can find on YouTube.

YouTube doesn't need a "tv program", and if you're going to compare it to something "old media", it's a library, not a television network.
Of course it wouldn't be uninteresting to have "suggestions" when you're going to the library, but it's a bit irrelevant of its potential.
Why, when I've read tons of articles on "how to find a job on the internet" "how to find recipes on the internet" that are basically lists of websites, I've rarely, if not never, read an article on "How to find information on the internet and what you need to know about it to do it efficiently".
Maybe because it takes more research than a few keywords in a search field. Or that once they're autonomous, the readers won't need such "assistance" from their newspapers/magazines anymore.
===

Mapping sound amplitude

In March, for the "open doors days" at school, I made this :
Basically, a Text-to-speech robotic voice is reading posts from the awful teens-oriented french blogging platform Skyblog.
The faces are from Youtube vloggers. I make them "talk" by using only the few video frames where they open the mouth, and mapping the opening of the mouth with the amplitude of the robot voice.
Creepiness ensues.
The same idea has then been used for my Big Final Work, mapping an eye blink from Fernand Léger's Ballet Méchanique with the amplitude of high, mid and low frequencies.

Ed Wood's Glen or Glenda is available in its totality on youtube
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Glen or Glenda (1953) is a movie, directed by and starring Ed Wood, and featuring Bela Lugosi, and Wood's then-girlfriend Dolores Fuller. The movie is a docudrama about transvestism and transsexuality, and is semi-autobiographical in nature. Wood himself was a transvestite, and the movie is a plea for tolerance. However, it has become a cult film due to its low-budget production values and idiosyncratic style.

You can buy it here, in Japanese (使えばわかります、その快適さが。?)

Depressed and scared by the comments on Digg about one of his post, a blogger blocks Digg traffic

XKDC's take on youtube trolls
[via the comments in the aforementioned tomayko post]

You remember the Honda Cog ad
it was verrry inspired by a short movie by artists Fischli&Weiss, that i had the luck to see a few years ago, but couldn't show
no i can, someone posted the 30 minutes long video on GoogleVideo

http://video.google.com/videoplay?d ocid=3812507039888532441&pl=true
it's cheaper but longer, and has FIRE!
and if you like it, there are TONS of "Rube Goldberg" machines on YouTube - even one or two made in Half-Life 2
http://www.youtube.com/results?search=R ube+goldberg
Eurodiscoohoohoo
They have a GREAT collection of video links, some that i've posted in the past
I especially love the Cheesy Eurodisco collection, staring German disco that sounds russian (twice), Danish Apache, disco dancing course, Devo fingers, accordian-playing skydivers wearing Russian military uniforms, Boney M
and Finnish Disco !

Google Video version
Finland is, btw, well known for its hard rock bands
They're even sending one of them to the Eurovision song contest 2006
The title says it all : Hard Rock Hallelujah

You can even see the finnish final here.. it's definitely... weird
Canterbury
WFMU also have 5 very interesting videos linked to the Canterbury scene
http://blog.wfmu.org/freeform/2006/03/c anterbury_vids.html
Robert Wyatt playing in 74 and 2003, Soft Machine live in 71, Caravan at the same show, and Kevin Ayers solo
those are refered on WMFU's blog, but come from http://musicforyoureyes.blogspot.com/, that has a HUGE LARGE collection of videos
including in the recent posts
Van Der Graaf Generator - Theme One (1972)
Van Der Graaf Generator - A Plague Of Lighthouse-Keepers (1972) (la vidéo que tu m'avais envoyée, tali !)
http://musicforyoureyes.blogspot.com/20 06/04/turn-on-generator.html

Reuben Lucius Goldberg (July 4, 1883 – December 7, 1970) was a cofounder and first president of the National Cartoonists Society. He is one of the most famous cartoonists in history. He earned lasting fame for his "Rube Goldberg machines" — devices that are exceedingly complex and perform very simple tasks in a very indirect and convoluted way.
